Deviana was switched with a dead human princess the day she was born. While the priestess is trying to read the child’s destiny she found out the little infant will be the end of their great kingdom, the king, her supposed father order the guards to kill her.
Her mother, Lyle, a mermaid queen, sacrifices everything to bring her into the world. Meanwhile, Mera, a human slave, gives birth to a stillborn child in a nearby kingdom. Episode 1 : A Princess’s Hidden Destiny
Lyle lie helplessly on the river trying to give life to the little merbaby. She is the daughter of the current queen in the sea but because she caught a terrible frozen disease she left the sea to live in the river until its time to give birth to the baby.
In a far island very far to the sea but not far to the river that leads to the sea, there live a kingdom which is very big in terms of land and military strength. The people who live in the kingdom have naturally dark skin and they wore simple fabrics made from cotton and died with dye gotten from bark of trees. The women adorn their hair with jewelries and flowers according to their ranks.
The wives of the rich lords uses golds and rubies while the commoners use beautiful freshly plucked flowers. Mera is a slave caught from a small village beside the river and was sold to the palace there she caught the eyes of the king who admire her beauty and decide to make her his mistress. She got pregnant and being another concubine makes the queen uneasy and a pregnant one? Double trouble.
A huge storm started the day Mera went into labour as it falls on the same night the mermaid princess lyle is also in labour. The two upcoming mothers used every strength left on their body to push their babies to life. Mera fainted immediately she have birth to her baby while the mermaid remain extremely weak she use the remaining strength left in her body to create a necklace she place on her merbaby’s neck. The necklaces shone a very bright light before it disappears and the baby’s tail turn to human legs. Lyle smiled as she breathe her last the storm increase as the river wash her body away to the large sea.
Meanwhile as the merbaby lose her tails Mera’s baby died immediately. The head physician pace around the room not knowing how to tell Mera that the baby died. She love Mera like her daughter but she is on the bad side with the Queen.
The midwives stare at her looking for an answer to this mess but she gave them none she told them not to tell anyone that Mera gave birth yet. She made her way to the river to wash her face according to her this will make her think well. She sat down crying as if she is the one that lose her baby then she saw a newborn beside her(lyle’s baby). She smirked at least the Queen won’t win this time she carry the baby running really fast as she sneak into mera’s room she switch the babies quickly but that secret belongs to her heart alone she only tell the midwives that it seems the baby is moving again the all shout in happiness as they praise God for the miracle.
The news doesn’t sound well to the queen that Mera’s child is alive and well but she smiled when she learnt Mera actually gave birth to a girl perfect for her.
Mera ask for her baby immediately she wakes up, she smiled looking at the very beautiful baby who shares the same yellow skin with her but its a shame the baby is not hers but she doesn’t know after all.
The high priestess was called by the King’s messenger to read the baby’s fate. The woman was dressed in a long gown with red wooden beads on her neck, her crown is made of softwood carved with many scary idols. Her left eyes was marked with white chalk and in her right hand is a calabash containing fresh animal blood. She mark the babies chest with the blood as the baby just let out a wide smile as the people watch the cuteness with smiles on their faces.
Then the priestess raised her head suddenly, bad air fills the atmosphere as she saw what the will become in the future.
“ Deva! ” she screamed meaning curse in their language hot smoke came out the calabash she is holding.
“ this girl is cursed ” she shouted and everyone gasp in shock how can a very cute baby like that cursed what is exactly her tender crimes to the gods?
“ cursed as how? What do you mean Ari? ” the king growled as silence fills the air.
“ she will be the one to destroy this kingdom in the future! She is destined to be that ” she said with a sorrow tone.
“ that is nonsense how can a girl destroy a kingdom she is not a warrior she can’t fight! ” Mera cried as the queen smirked both women did not expect this at all.
“ don’t question the Gods Mera guards seize that baby and kill her immediately ” the king ordered.
“ no no not my baby don’t do this to my baby no ” Mera cried as she drag the baby with the soldiers she tore the clothes as she ran with the baby out of the castle and to the woods. But the guards catch up with her at the edge of a cliff. Under the cliff is a stone cold running river.
“ alright I’ll do it myself i can’t let you kill my baby no o ” she said holding the baby tightly.
The guards move closer but in a twink of an eye she threw the baby down the cliff.
“ i didn’t ask them to kill her ” the high priestess thought
Episode 2 : The Switch
“ Arrest her! ” the captain ordered the guards and they grab Mera roughly leading her to a prison where the queen later come to visit her.
“ Mera hmm its a shame with all your beauty and my husband’s favour you had to give birth to a cursed child that’s bad you know ” the queen grin as she make fun of Mera’s predicament but Mera isn’t listening at all something else is on her mind as she held the part of the baby’s clothes she tore earlier tightly as if her life depend on it she started smiling confusing the queen.
“ my poor baby. Don’t worry i won’t let them kill you oh they won’t even dare touch you ”
*laughing
“ do you know who your father is? He is the king of this large kingdom so powerful and great so tell who is going to touch you? ”
Mera held the clothes as if it is actually the baby talking to it calmly with a smile. The queen finally pitied her shaking her head as she wipe her own tears with a little piece of fabric.
“ don’t worry baby I will think of a name for you soon with your father you’ll be the princess of this kingdom so cute ”
The queen left to take care of her five months old son, after breastfeeding her boy she gently lay him on the her fluffy bed.
“ i don’t know why i actually pity that woman today. ”
*sigh
“ its hard to lose a baby yes I can’t bear losing you Nabu i will lose my mind just like her ” she said as she comb the little hair on his head with a wooden comb.
One of her sisters enter the chamber looking so happy.
“ congratulations my queen finally your burden has been lifted ” Azeri said happily but the queen is not in the mood to answer her she is still thinking about her husband’s mistress who lost her mind.
“ what happen sis did i say something wrong?” worried about the plain look her sister just give her she take a seat beside her to study her expression.
“ that woman lost her mind. According to what i heard she kill the baby with her hands ” the Queen said with a low voice.
“ that’s so good for her. Hmm no one mess with my sister ” Azeri spat the queen just shake her head.
Azeri doesn’t know how it feels like to lose a child because she never had one so that explain her devilish character.
“ i wonder how the baby is alive in the first place” Azeri said standing up.
“ what do you mean Azi? ” the queen asked raising her eyebrow staring at her elder sister.
“ i order someone to kill her immediately she was born and that person told me the job is done only to see the baby well again well its nothing now whether i killed her or not the baby is dead again ”
“ Azi you are so cruel! ” the queen shouted angrily.
“and I can’t understand why you are angry? If you had the chance won’t you do it? You are talking as if you are the saint here please free me from this behavior I’m taking my leave ” Azeri who is very angry now left without using any minute more.
Mera laughed loud as she was lead to the old house isolated in the bush everything occurring to her is like a joke since her assumed baby is still with her.
Lyle’s baby giggles as she float on the river, she is in her home nothing can harm her now. The river washed her to a small island where a small tribe lives happily in their own way
Episode 3 : Growing Up Human
Sixteen years later…
“ Devi! Deviana!! ” the old lady called the sixteen years old child who is busy enjoying her life climbing the tree at the back of their hut. Beautiful and sweet, she has brown hair with seashells at the back of her ears she wore little fabric which cover her breast to her upper thighs but exposing her long legs making her look like a sexy goddess. Doesn’t know her roots she was found on the seashore by the old Lady who raised her till now. Doesn’t have plans to get her married even though her mates are married.
The old lady this is Deviana is still immature to get married, she doesn’t have any sense of responsibility aside from playing around.
“ get down from that tree you’ll get hurt Devi listen to me ” the old lady frustrated yelled more.
“ don’t worry I’ll be safe ” Deviana said naughtily still struggling to get to the top.
“ I need water for the cooking will you get down and find me some? ” the old surely knows how to get deviana to get down. Deviana loves going to the sea to fetch water she doesn’t even know why she just love the feeling the sea breeze always give her she feels peace.
“ OK here I go ” she jumped down getting the pot she hurry to the sea.
She decide to take the short route instead of passing the normal one in the village. She ran very faster but bump into the rude mannerless prince of their village she’s being crushing on.
“ I’m sorry ” she said not raising her head afraid to look at him because it’s the secret talk of the villagers that the prince is too cruel and merciless.
“ so you are sorry? ” he said with a stern gaze arms akimbo obviously angry.
“ raise your head! ” the prince command her.
“ no just let me remain like this ” she said heart beating fast.
“ disobeying me now? ” he shouted.
“ I won’t dare ” she said raising her head slowly *think her beauty got the prince.
“ I was just telling you to you know watch your way when you ah running like .. That you may bump into a wild animal so hmm be careful ” he couldn’t make a good sentence just want to send her away as quickly as possible.
“ so you are not going to punish me? ” she asked with a smile.
“ yes you can go now ” he said shaking his head to stop him from looking at her in a lustful manner. He may be cold and cruel but at least he respect women sometimes. He only mess around with his make servants.
Deviana walk slowly to the sea sitting down on the beach, she place the pot beside her enjoying the cold breeze. She remember how the prince treated then she laughed out hard.
“ he is not as cruel as what they say. I knew there is something cute about him but in the villager’s eyes he is cruel I like him. Oh I wonder if I’m permitted to do so ” she thought watching the waves she sigh deeply.
“ But I can’t help but like him even though he finally meet me for the first time he’s been in my dream ever since I know him ” she whispered placing her hand on her cheeks.
“ Devi ” a voice called from the sea.
“ someone is calling me? ”
“ Ana you have to know who you are ” the faint voice continue.
“ what is that? ”
Episode 4 : The Prophecy
She stand up at once as if she is under a spell, oblivious to her a light from the necklace her mother created on her neck started shining as she make each steps to the sea. She places her feet in the water but someone stop her and everything became calm.
“ hey don’t tell me you want to kill yourself by jumping in that mad sea ” Prince Jodi said dragging her out of the sea.
“ it’s calling me ” she said pointing at the blue sea.
“ Gosh she is crazy! ” he muttered staring at her like she is some doll.
“ Oh okay I’ve filled your pot you can go now ” the Prince said carrying the pot for her she turn around finally normal she collect her pot heading straight home without a thank you.
“ oh she didn’t even say thanks ”.
Three days later…
Its time for an annual festival in the palace, everybody in the village were present. The palace was built with baked mud decorated with some chalk painting. The villagers bow as the king made his appearance his two princes follow him too. Prince Jodi started finding the strange girl in the crowd but he couldn’t find her.
Deviana on her own is busy at home washing kitchen appliances. She doesn’t have any friends all her age mates had gotten married recently so no one to play with anymore. Her granny doesn’t want her to get married because she is still immature and with the fact that she want the best for her. She want her to find someone worth marrying that’s why she is still keeping her.
Deviana after taking her bath, she adorn her hair with freshly plucked flowers. The seashells are still behind her ears, only her grandmother know exactly why she place it there.
He finally saw the one he’s being looking for since he felt at peace. The villagers were surprised to see a smile on their Prince’s face. It is just so strange such a wide smile on a cold face. The ceremony end but he didn’t get a chance to talk to her before she left.
The next day, granny send Devi to get some water, she refused at first which surprised the old woman.
“ but you like visiting the sea so much? Why the sudden change? ” the woman asked still in shock why the young girl refused.
“ Granny I don’t want to go to that place today. I don’t know why ” she replied shrugging her shoulder.
“ but we need water and salt too. ” the granny try to stand up and deviana help her doing so.
“ OK I’m going ” she said carrying her small pot.
She sigh as she get to the sea hope the strange thing won’t happen today. She bend a little filling her pot with water when a figure appear behind her.
“ why is your thigh filled with many scars? ” Jodi asked behind her after staring at her for so long.
“ why are you staring at my thigh in the first place? ” she asked trying to lift her pot over her head.
“ wait lady what is your name? I’ve met you like three times here and I have no idea what your name is ”.
“ its only twice ” she cuts through.
“ what’s that? ” he asked.
“ we’ve met here only twice oh my name is Devi, Deviana ” she said with a faint voice when she realized she is talking to the ruthless prince.
“ Deviana oh nice I’m Jodi ” he said.
“ everyone knows your name ” she said absentmindedly.
“ if you will will allow me I have to go know my grandma will be worried ”.
She walk away trying not to look at the sea much or it might be calling her again.
Episode 5 : The Betrayal
Jodi won’t leave Deviana alone again whenever she come to the sea. Even though she enjoys his company she is still uncomfortable around him. People are starting to notice them because they walk together together everywhere. The prince will follow her to the sea and help her carry her pot of water even she is against it. They will end up fighting and laughing at each other’s madness.
One day her grandma called her to the kitchen shed, she ask her to sit down which she did immediately.
“ Devi what’s going on between you and prince Jodi? ” she asked and Devi became awkward.
“ nothing we are just friends ” she said with a very awkward smile.
“ well there’s nothing like friendship between a man a woman or do you love him? ”
“ no he just keeps me company ” she said twisting her mouth.
“ oh company I see. Well I see you are getting more matured this days thanks to the person who is keeping you COMPANY ” the old granny said emphasizing the company part. Shy Devi quickly stand up and ran away.
It is almost dusk before she return.
“ I thought you won’t come home again. Anyway your food is there if you u care for it ” the granny said pointing to the basket of food inside surprisingly After eating deviana went to the bush to watch the moonlight from her favorite angle as she always do every night but this particular seems strange she feels someone else is in the forest with her. She even thought it is the prince because he always appear everywhere around her surprisingly.
“ my prince if you are here show yourself I will be going soon? ” she said but a strange cloth cover her mouth forcefully making her scream loudly but a smack on her nape keep her mouth shut as she faints immediately.
Jodi look around as he heard Devi’s loud scream he ran to the forest but he couldn’t find her anywhere.
“ Devi! ” he called but heard nothing.
“ Deviana!! ”
“ Auntie is Deviana home? ” he asked the lady living in a hut beside Deviana’s.
“ how should I know? She never stay in one place but wait I’m sorry I didn’t know it was you my pri… ” she couldn’t finish the statement before he vanished at once.
He knock on Deviana’s hut twice before grandma opened the door.
“ how may I help you prince jodi? ” Grandma asked immediately she opened the door.
“ is Deviana here? ”
“ no she went to the Bush earlier its so strange she is not home by this hour. She never stayed so late ” Grandma said.
“ she is not in the bush ”.
“ what? ” Grandma gasp before looking for a seat to sit down so she can be calm.
“ i heard her scream earlier but I can’t find her anymore ”.
“ do you think she was kidnapped? ” Grandma cried.
“ no who will kidnap Devi? ” he scratch his head with a worried look on his face.
